Specialisms

  •  Insurance, banking and the legal profession

Since it was established in 1988, PLS has focussed on the financial sector and the legal profession, translating for banks, insurers stockbrokers, civil law notaries and law firms. For stockbrokers, we translate stock market analyses, newsletters on stock-market trends, sector analyses and a range of other marketing documents, including prospectuses. For civil law notaries we translate, for instance, deeds of incorporation, articles of association, deeds of conveyance, wills, (ante)nuptial contracts and powers of attorney. Banks make use of our services for the translation of marketing materials, contracts, correspondence, terms and conditions, bank guarantees, prospectuses and other documents which are the stock-in-trade of modern banking.

  •  Pension funds and actuaries

With the introduction of greater flexibility in pension plans, our services extend to translating pension regulations, annual reports of pension funds, actuarial reports and actuarial and technical operating memoranda (ABTNs). We have developed a specialist translation service for pension funds, life insurers which offer pension products, and the actuarial profession generally. As actuaries have extended their activities to include the broader range of employee benefits, so our services have also expanded to support our actuarial clients in these areas.

  •  Energy sector, liberalised sectors, economic regulation and competition law

Through our legal translation service we have developed services which focus on the energy sector: from the translation of marketing texts, general terms and conditions and contracts, to the translation of national legislation and documents relating to the regulatory framework of the energy sector. This service has developed over the years into a fully-fledged translation service in the area of competition law. We translate a wide range of documents for government regulatory authorities and law firms active in this area.

  •  Higher education and internationalisation

In recent years, Dutch higher education has sought to internationalise by attracting foreign students, teaching Dutch students in English, arranging foreign work placements and a host of other initiatives. Increasingly course materials are also produced in English or are translated into English. We have a group of translators who focus on producing teaching and learning materials for higher education institutions, particularly in the areas of economics, management, law, but also in education and social work. Our activities also include the translation and editing of journal articles, doctoral theses and other publications for Dutch academics and faculties of universities across a wide range of disciplines. Some of our translators have a background in higher education and are familiar with current trends in education  innovation (blended learning, competence-based education, flexible learning, distance education, e-learning etc.). Needless to say, they draw on these insights when translating course materials.

  •  Italian - a new specialism

For many years foreign companies, in particular financial service providers, which wished to establish a presence in Italy have found that the market is fairly closed. In response to this need, PLS has developed a core group of native speakers of Italian who are able to assist our clients who wish to take advantage of the increasing opportunities offered by the Italian market.  (Click here for more information.)
